Kindergarten – 2nd Grade Physical Education Curriculum

In the primary grades physical education instruction is focused on the fundamental concepts of loco-motor movements, body and spatial awareness, and safe play.  These concepts are taught through a series of warm-up activities that incorporate these concepts, and group activities that reinforce these fundamentals.  In a normal physical education class, students gather briefly to discuss areas the instructor will be focusing on that day (i.e. cooperation), begin warm up, and get into activities.  Grades are determined by the student’s willingness to put forth their best effort each and every class period.  It’s important to know that how fast they can run, or how far they can throw a ball has nothing to do with a student’s overall grade.  Another area that weighs heavily on a students overall grade is his/her efforts in listening and following instructions.  Primary students will have P.E. twice a week: once with their individual class, and once with the entire grade.

3rd Grade – 5th Grade Physical Eduction Curriculum

In the intermediate grades, physical education instruction focuses on solidifying basic loco-motor movements, hand/foot/ eye coordination, and providing an introduction to basic team sports.  Loco-motor movements are mastered through warm-up activities.  Hand/foot /eye coordination skills are utilized in virtually all class activities.  These skills are developed as we learn team sports. We learn lead up games that help students develop the required skills necessary to participate in the activity.  For example, skills and rules of team handball start with a game of keep away.  Once keep away has been mastered, the rules of team handball are incorporated into the game.  The final step is taking the skills they’ve developed, along with the rules, and playing the game.  This formula is applied repeatedly throughout the intermediate grades.  Students are evaluated based on their attitude, effort, and sportsmanship during class.  The grade each student receives has nothing to his/her success or failure during this process.  Intermediate grades have PE twice a week.

Middle School Physical Education Curriculum

The goal of the middle school physical education program is to introduce students to concepts and skills they can carry through life.  We will accomplish this by exposing students to many individual, dual, and team experiences throughout the year. These experiences will be creative non-threatening small group drills, modified games and all active delivery systems.

GRADING POLICY

  • Students will learn skills necessary to perform a variety of activities.

These will be translated into a letter grade for both progress reports and report cards.
