ASB School Counselor
| My name is Lori Landes and I have the privilege of supporting the Assumption-St. Bridget School as their School Counselor. I have a Masters of Social Work and a Masters of Education in School Counseling. I enjoy working with students, parents and teachers to help students have the most successful school experience possible. When children encounter problems either in academic, social, or behavioral areas their success can be limited. It is the job of the school counselor, the student, the family, and the school to help identify the issues and seek solutions to any roadblocks to a child’s success. In the past, school counselors were known to only talk with children when they were having troubles or needed a schedule change.
Today school counseling has evolved and most school counselors approach their job by implementing a developmental guidance program with a focus in individual and group support, classroom curriculum, responsive services, and administrative support. Please see my power point by clicking in the menu for more detailed information on developmental guidance. Generally, school counselors like myself have a much more pro-social approach rather than just having a reactive response to issues that arise. School counselors work with their schools to promote positive discipline, to promote school-wide bullying prevention, and problem solving methods, and other activities to engage students in positive social behavior. On a typical day at school, I work with a few individual students, facilitate classroom guidance lessons, consult with teachers and or parents, meet with groups of students, supervise students at recess, and collaborate with fellow colleagues on support plans for students who need extra assistance. Students at Assumption-St. Bridget School know that they have an additional adult in their life who is on their side to support them without judgment when their life is going well and when they are facing a challenge. There are over five hundred students at Assumption-St. Bridget School. I am lucky to know most by name. One of the best ways I get to know students is by being in their classroom or when they join me for lunch. It is amazing how students will share pieces of their life with you when you actively listen. It is so important to hear what our students have to share and for them to feel that they have been heard, thus validating that their life stories are significant. It is important that I continue my own learning to enhance my skills as a counselor. For my professional development, I meet with area counselors throughout the year, attend trainings both local and national on issues relevant to school counselors, read current journals and books about helping children and parents. It is a joy to wake up each day and to enjoy the work that you do. I feel privileged to work at Assumption-St. Bridget School. |
