Support Team
| What does the Student Support Team do?
The Student Support Team consists of the school counselor, the reading support teacher, and selected classroom teachers. Parents, teachers, and other specialists can refer students who are struggling with the academic, social, and/or behavioral aspects of school. The Student Support Team meets approximately once a month. The discussions focus on the student’s strengths and areas for growth, setting clear goals and expectations for the student, and strategies to help the student achieve the goals. The end result is a written action plan called an “Accommodation Plan.” How are parents involved? Parents can request that a plan be written for their child if they notice he/she is having difficulties at school. Parents can do this by talking with the classroom teacher, school counselor, or reading support teacher. Parents are also notified if a teacher notices their child is struggling and recommends that a plan be written. The Accommodation Plans always include input from the child’s parents because we need parents’ expertise on what works and does not work for their child. Who will see the plan? The student’s current teachers, the reading support teacher, the school counselor, the principal, and the student’s parents. When appropriate the student also views the plan. It is often very helpful for students to know what goals they are working towards and how others are helping them to achieve those goals. Written plans are never sent to another school or anyone outside of ASB, except when a parent requests this. What happens to the plan at the end of the year? The plans will be updated at the end of each school year to reflect the growth the student made over the course of the year. Then at the beginning of the new school year, the plan will be given to the student’s new teacher. This ensures that the new teacher starts out the year using strategies that have been effective in the past. When the team and parents find that a child is meeting grade level standards and no longer needs the strategies listed in the plan, then the plan will kept on file at ASB. The plan is kept as a reference in case the student encounters similar difficulties later in his/her school career. However, it will no longer be given to the child’s teachers. |
