Religion
Students will learn more about the Catholic faith, the Church community, parts of the Mass, and prayer.  We will specifically study the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.  Along with participating in various forms of prayer, students will be required to demonstrate mastery of several prayers as specifically defined by the Archdiocese’s curriculum standards.

Literacy
Students will develop their decoding, fluency, and comprehension strategies while reading a variety of texts.  Students will use strategies to decode words and read with good phrasing.  They will complete book reports and set goals for their own reading.  Students will review the basics of writing a sentence, apply spelling patterns in their written work, and practice their printing.  They will learn to write friendly letters, journals, paragraphs, narratives, and simple reports.

Math
The focus areas for second grade math are place value through 1,000, addition and subtraction, and measurement.  Students will master basic addition and subtraction facts, and learn to regroup multi-digit numbers in addition and subtraction.   Students will learn about time, money, and fractions.  Students will also solve word and logic problems.

Science
Students will participate in hands-on activities and investigations using three FOSS kits.  The kits are New Plants, Sand, Silt, and Rocks, and Balance and Motion.  We will also have units on the solar system and cetaceans.

Social Studies
We will study community and examine families and neighborhoods as types of community.  Students will gain a greater understanding of the roles of individuals and groups in a community.  Our study of community will begin with examining our families through our Family Ties project.  We revisit families and compare and contrast cultures during our Holidays Around the World unit.

Drama
The goal of the second grade drama program is to give students a positive artistic experience. We begin most drama classes with a story.  Most of the stories are multi-cultural tales, but occasionally we create our own stories.  The stories are connected to activities and creative play that enhance their learning. Students love to bring the stories to life by recreating characters and favorite moments through drama. We also focus on specific performance skills with various games, projects and activities.

Music
In second grade students continue to learn more about music elements while using their music books to help them focus on the use of music notation, both rhythmic and melodic.  Movement, singing, and playing instruments are still an important part of their experiences.  They begin to explore the element of harmony with simple part singing.

Physical Education
In second grade physical education instruction is focused on the fundamental concepts of loco-motor movements, body and spatial awareness, and safe play.  These concepts are taught through a series of warm-up activities that incorporate these concepts, and group activities that reinforce these fundamentals.  Students have PE twice a week.
